3 Ways Jesus Surpasses the Angels: Name, Honour, Status

Aug 14, 2025 20

[5] For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”? [6] And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” [7] Of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.” [8] But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. [9] You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.” (Hebrews 1:5–9 ESV)

Over the last two days, we’ve seen that angels are glorious beings — worshipping God, delivering His Word, ministering to His people, and joining Him at the final judgment. But as glorious as angels are, Hebrews 1:5-9 begins to show us that Jesus is far greater.

JESUS HAS A BETTER NAME

In verse 5, the Father calls Jesus “my Son.” This is not a title given to any angel. It’s drawn from Psalm 2 and 2 Samuel 7, pointing to God’s promised King from David’s line. This Son is not only the heir to David’s throne but also the eternal Son of God. No angel can claim that identity.

JESUS HAS GREATER HONOUR

Verse 6 commands all God’s angels to worship Him. These mighty beings we’ve been talking about — who stand in awe of God’s glory — are commanded to direct their worship to Jesus. The worshippers we stand in awe of are themselves in awe of Him.

JESUS HAS A HIGHER STATUS

In verses 7–8, the angels are described as servants — winds and flames, doing the will of God. But of the Son, God says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.” Jesus is not a servant in the household; He is the sovereign King on the throne. His kingdom is marked by righteousness, and His reign will never end.

Angels are awesome — but they are not the Son. They serve at His command. They worship at His feet. They exist to do His will.

When we see their greatness, we are meant to lift our eyes higher. Jesus’ name is greater. His honour is higher. His status is supreme. And if this King has called you into His kingdom, then He is worthy of your full allegiance and trust.

Reflection:

Thank God for the greatness of Jesus’ name, honour, and status. Ask Him to deepen your awe of His Son, so that you worship and serve Him above all.
