“There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest. Captives also enjoy their ease . . . The small and great are there, and the slave is freed from his master” (Job 3:17-19).
No, this is not a panegyric in favour of heaven or some utopian paradise. It is part of a poem preferring death to life as many in the world must have it. Its blunt depiction of the unequal and onerous truth of the world order serves as a reality check to introduce death and the grave as welcome, desirable; a liberating destination. There are worse things than death. But what if there is something better? The gospel says there is: Life, free, abundant, exhilarating, drenched with love, and never-ending. That—is better than oblivion.
