“Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us . . .” (1 Kings 20:23).
This is how the Arameans explained to themselves, their defeat at the hands of the army of Israel. ‘If we fight them on the plains, we will win,’ they thought. It may seem quaint to us how people thought of gods as confined to a patch of the earth inhabited by their devotees. Just take care of business outside of a god’s prefectures and he/they will be powerless to influence the outcome. Make sure you fight your battles in a place where your god has a say in affairs and you are more likely to get the result you are after! The Bible begins and cultivates a widening in human conceptions of God from primitive tribal king to God of all the earth, and the whole universe; a necessary development giving rise the idea of a God so great that he cannot be manipulated by humans seeking their own goals.
