“Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?” (Job 40:8).
In this way God interrogates Job. And what is the answer? Job knows that in his grief and pain he has indeed done what the question suggests. In doing so he represents the instinctive response of all humanity as it confronts the complicated and frequently unreasonable course of world history. To blame the divine for the way things are is less confronting than the contemplation of human freedom and responsibility. With what vehemence, what indignation we insist that God be just. Do we protest overmuch? The question itself is a subtle hint that this is indeed so. Even our desperate demand for justice cloaks an uneasiness that we might ourselves be in the wrong.
