Unlimited: Our Unfaithfulness and God’s Faithfulness
May 26, 2022 1399
What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? 4 Not at all! (Romans 3:3–4(a)).
The apostle Paul is arguing that Israel had the benefit of receiving God’s promises. However, Paul acknowledges that they were unfaithful. But one way or another, God will find a way to keep his word. The point that Paul is making here is that human unfaithfulness never nullifies God’s faithfulness. Paul will return to this important question later on in Romans 9–11, of how God will keep his promises to the Jewish people. And he will answer it in an astonishing way!
Human unfaithfulness never nullifies God’s faithfulness.
The important point to note for now is that no matter how unfaithful we are to God, he will always be faithful to us. Paul is in the process of establishing that all, both Jews and Gentiles, are sinners and guilty before God. This is why God’s faithfulness is so fundamental, because, as the apostle John writes:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9.)
We may often feel as if that is not true, because of our guilt and shame, yet,
If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself (2 Tim. 2:13.)
Truly, we may say with the psalmist:
Your faithfulness endures to all generations (Psalm 119:90.)
