Unlimited: The Blessing of Forgiveness

Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered (Romans 4:7).

Paul is quoting Psalm 32:1–2, composed by David. Read Psalm 51 and see how deeply David understood forgiveness in his own life.

One very important point about how the apostle Paul uses this quote is that he is absolutely equating God’s crediting of righteousness to David with God’s forgiveness of his sin.

Forgiveness is in the very heart of the Gospel. It is what makes it beat; it is what pumps its life–giving power throughout the world.

In fact, it would not be too much to say that the Gospel is all about forgiveness. Everything that you might say that the Gospel is about, all of it stems from forgiveness.

The Gospel is all about forgiveness

It’s taken me a long time to realise this truth. That’s because all of my religious experience was about the Gospel as being something difficult to understand. It’s because forgiveness is so difficult for us to do. And it’s because all my life I was taught that we get what we deserve. Well, we don’t. Not from God when we are in His grace.

I thought that the Bible was all about the grandest sweep of history, and grand philosophy, and about advice about how to live. But while all those things are there, that’s not what the Bible is all about. The Bible is all about God’s forgiving grace.

Spiritual Application

Take some time to think it through. If having your sins covered is the same as having them forgiven, and if this is essentially the same as justification, then why do we complicate salvation so much?
