” . . . Your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great”  (Psalm 18:35).

Sometimes when I think of my mother who died long ago, I see her with apron on, stirring bed-linen in the huge wood-fired copper, toiling over a hot oven and sharing out the victuals among her large family–often going without in order to satisfy the insatiable hungers of her brood.  Then I see her prostrated in bed for days on end; laid low by her cursed migraines; me peering through her door to see if she was moving, still alive.  It cost Mum much to cause us to thrive.  So speaks this Scripture, of God. He is strong to sustain us, but he stoops, he spends himself on us; the personal cost he bears for our progress is beyond counting.
