Unlimited: With Your Mouth

and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved (Romans 10:10b).
Paul isn’t saying that there are two separate requirements that must be met in order for us to be saved, just as he isn’t saying that being “justified” and being “saved” are two separate things. They are the same thing. In the same way, the profession of our mouths should be the same as the belief of our hearts.
How many professed followers of Christ there are for whom this isn’t true! Their mouths may often speak the name of Jesus, yet their hearts are far from him. Our mouths must speak what our hearts believe.
Does your mouth speak what your heart believes?
Some people, based on this one passage in Romans, say that there are two separate steps to being saved. They say that to be properly saved, you must first believe the Gospel in your heart, and second, you must specifically say that Jesus is Lord in front of other people.
But Paul isn’t teaching here that there are two steps to salvation. What is consistently taught in the Bible is that we receive eternal life only by believing in Jesus (John 3:16; 5:24; 6:47.) In Romans 10:9–10, Paul is engaging in some typical Hebrew poetic parallelism. His purpose isn’t to explain the “steps” of salvation at all, but rather to poetically emphasise the nearness of the righteousness of God to you when you accept it by faith.
Spiritual Application
Does your mouth speak what your heart believes? How freely do you confess your faith?
Amen
