Unlimited: The Mind of the Lord
Jun 21, 2023 706
Who has known the mind of the Lord? (Romans 11:34a).
It is important to remember that when Paul refers to the Lord in his letters, he is always referring to Christ. Paul refers to the mind of Christ several times throughout his epistles. Here, he is quoting Isaiah 40:13. He had quoted the same passage in his first letter to the Corinthian believers, prefaced with:
The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments (1 Cor 2:14–15).
To humbly trust your heavenly Father is what it means to “have the mind of Christ”.
So, here we have two apparently conflicting ideas. The first one is that no-one can know the mind of the Lord. The second idea is that if you are led by the Spirit, then you have the mind of Christ. This is because while a follower of Christ will not fully understand why God may guide them along certain paths and allow specific circumstances to occur in their life, still they will trust him. To humbly trust your heavenly Father is what it means to “have the mind of Christ” as Paul also teaches us in Phil. 2:5–8.
Spiritual Application
Ultimately, we must humbly accept that we cannot know the mind of Christ, although the Spirit of God will progressively transform our mind into Christ’s likeness. Do you need to know everything? How willing are you to simply trust in the Lord?
