Unlimited: Giving to God

Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them? (Romans 11:35).

The apostle Paul is here quoting the words with which the Lord God challenged Job (41:11). In the second part of that verse, the Lord says,

… Everything under heaven is Mine (Job 41:11).

We often talk about “giving” to God. We like to think that we own things. But at the end of the day, we don’t. In a real sense, everything we think is ours is only graciously “loaned” to us by God, to see what we will do with it to invest it for eternity.

God has already given so much to us, that all of our “giving” is ultimately but “a drop in the ocean” compared to his.

Furthermore, however much we think we might be able to “give” to God, the reality is that he has already given so much to us, that all of our “giving” is ultimately but “a drop in the ocean” compared to his. Think of it. The Father gave his one-and-only Son. God gave the fulness of himself to us at the Cross.

The question from the book of Job with which Paul challenges us here also reminds us that there is no “repayment” in the salvation. The Gospel isn’t some kind of business transaction, by which God saves us on condition that we please him in the future. God saves us unconditionally, with no strings attached. Whatever we give to God as a result is merely a humble expression of gratitude.

Spiritual Application

Find a piece of paper and write down three things that you have given to God. Then on a separate sheet of paper write down three things that God has given you. Prayerfully compare what you have written on the two sheets of paper. Scrunch up the list of what you have given to God and throw it away. Pray a prayer of thanks for what God has given to you.
