Have you ever noticed how easy it is to begin something with energy, but how much harder it is to see it through to the end? We launch into new diets, fitness routines, or projects with enthusiasm, but over time, that initial drive fades. Personally, I’m very good at starting projects. Finishing? Not so good. The Christian life can feel much the same. Starting is one thing; persevering is another.
Our passage for this week, Hebrews 3:7-19, is an extended call to hold firm to Jesus until the end. The writer takes us back to Psalm 95 and Israel’s wilderness wanderings. God had rescued His people from slavery in Egypt. They walked through the Red Sea on dry ground. They ate bread from heaven and drank water from a rock. They had every reason to trust God. But many did not. They grumbled, hardened their hearts, and refused to believe His promises. And so they never entered the rest He had prepared for them.
Listen to these words of warning as Psalm 95 is quoted in Hebrews chapter 3 beginning at verse 7,
[7] Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, [8] do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, [9] where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. [10] Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ [11] As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” (Hebrews 3:7–11 ESV)
The warning is clear: you can experience God’s goodness, start strong, and still fall short because of a hardened heart. It happened to Israel. It can happen to us.
But this isn’t written to crush us with despair. It’s written to drive us back to Christ. We’re told to hear His voice today. To guard our hearts against sin’s deceit. To encourage one another daily. To hold fast to the confidence we had at first. This is not a call to simply try harder; instead, it’s the life of faith, an active trust in Jesus, fuelled by the gospel of grace, and sustained by the community of God’s people.
And the gospel of grace is this: Jesus has done what Israel could never do. Where they failed in the wilderness, He remained faithful. Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, and triumphant resurrection, He has opened the way into God’s ultimate rest. That’s why we keep going. That’s why we hold on because Christ is holding on to us.
This week, we’ll unpack what this means in practice. We’ll hear the urgency of God’s voice today. We’ll reflect on the tragic lessons of Israel’s unbelief. We’ll see the importance of encouraging one another, day by day, to keep trusting Jesus. We’ll be reminded that sharing in Christ means holding firm right to the end. And we’ll confront the sobering truth that unbelief shuts the door on God’s rest, while faith in Christ flings it wide open.
This passage carries a clear warning, and we ought not shy away from recognising how the Holy Spirit may be challenging us in this passage. Here’s the thing: warnings in Scripture aren’t there to spoil life but to save it. They’re God’s way of keeping us safe, of protecting us from danger, of guiding us home. And alongside the warning is a promise – the promise of God’s true rest, offered in Christ to all who believe.
The call of Hebrews 3 flows into the big idea of the whole letter: don’t harden your heart, don’t drift, don’t give up. Instead, hear God’s voice today, fix your eyes on Jesus, and keep walking with your brothers and sisters until the very end. Because He is faithful, and He will bring His people safely into the joy of His eternal rest.
Reflection:
Where might you be tempted to harden your heart today, and how can you respond instead with faith in Jesus’ promises?
