“For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.” (ESV)

Joshua’s Rest Wasn’t Enough
After Moses died, Joshua led Israel into the promised land. They finally entered the inheritance God had promised. They tasted freedom, safety from enemies, and life in God’s blessing. But it didn’t last.
The book of Judges tells us how quickly the people spiralled back into disobedience. Their hearts turned from God, and their rest dissolved into turmoil.
That’s why Hebrews says: “If Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.” The rest Joshua brought was good, but it wasn’t ultimate.
The Better Joshua
Here’s where the spotlight turns to Jesus. In Greek, Joshua and Jesus share the same name. It’s as if the preacher is saying, “Joshua (in the Old Testament) gave you something temporary, but the true and better Joshua (Jesus) gives you something eternal.”
Joshua led God’s people into a physical land. Jesus leads God’s people into eternal life. Joshua fought enemies with the sword. Jesus defeats sin, Satan, and death through His cross and resurrection. Joshua brought a fragile rest. Jesus secures a forever rest.
Verse 9 calls it “a Sabbath rest for the people of God.” This is more than one day off each week. It’s eternal fellowship with God Himself.
The Work Is Finished
Verse 10 explains: “For whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.”
God finished creation and rested. Jesus finished redemption and now invites us to rest in Him. On the cross, He declared, “It is finished.” Nothing more needs to be added. No striving, no proving ourselves, no endless spiritual hustle.
The gospel is the good news that God offers eternal rest to a restless and wandering people through faith in Christ Jesus. Jesus is the true and better Joshua, bringing His people home through His life, death, and resurrection.
Rest in Him
As we considered two days ago, our culture says, “Keep working, keep hustling, keep proving yourself.” But Hebrews points to something better. Jesus has done the work. Rest is found not in achievement but in Him.
To enter this rest is to trust Christ. To believe His promise. To stop relying on your own performance and lean wholly on His finished work.
This is the invitation on the table for you: come to Jesus, the better Joshua. Enter His rest by faith in Him alone.
Reflection:
Father, thank You for sending Jesus, the better Joshua. Help me stop striving to prove myself, and instead rest in His finished work.
