Heed the Warning – Hebrews 6:4-8
Sep 25, 2025 26
[4] For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, [5] and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, [6] and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. [7] For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. [8] But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. (ESV)

A Sobering Word
This is one of the most challenging passages in Scripture. It describes people who have been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Spirit and in God’s Word, and yet have fallen away (vv4-6). It is impossible, Hebrews says, to restore them again to repentance.
The language is shocking – crucifying the Son of God all over again and holding Him up to contempt (v6). This is not a picture of ordinary struggle or doubt. It’s a willful, hardened rejection of Christ after knowing His goodness.
Guardrails on the Road
So what does this mean for us? Can true Christians lose their salvation? Some interpret it that way. Others argue these people were never truly saved. Still others think it’s a hypothetical scenario.
But here’s the key: the writer of Hebrews isn’t pulling back from the seriousness of the warning. Whatever view you take, the point is clear – don’t play games with sin, don’t flirt with unbelief, don’t drift away from Christ.
And for genuine believers, this passage doesn’t undermine assurance; it strengthens it. Warnings like this are God’s guardrails on the road of faith. They keep us awake, alert, and pressing forward. If you feel the weight of this warning and want to stay with Christ, that’s evidence of His Spirit at work in you.
Two Kinds of Land
Hebrews gives a vivid image: the rain falls on the land, but the outcome reveals its true nature (vv7-8). One field produces a useful crop and is blessed. The other produces only thorns and thistles and is burned.
God’s Word and blessings are like the rain – they fall on everyone. But the question is: what fruit is produced? Genuine faith bears a crop of love, hope, and obedience. A barren field shows a heart that was never truly rooted in Christ.
Clinging to Christ
This warning drives us not to despair, but to cling more tightly to Jesus. He is the once-for-all sacrifice who bore the curse in our place. He is the risen Son who cannot be crucified again. He is our High Priest who intercedes for us and keeps us to the end.
The call is urgent: don’t turn away. Keep trusting Jesus. Keep pressing on in faith. Keep producing fruit that comes from salvation.
Reflection
Father, keep me from drifting. Use your Word to guard me and strengthen me. Help me cling to Jesus, bear good fruit, and persevere in faith until the end.
