Where Is Jesus Now? – Hebrews 9:23–26

Hebrews 9:23–26

[23] Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. [24] For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. [25] Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, [26] for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. (ESV)

Where is Jesus now

We’ve been walking through the earthly tabernacle – the lampstand, the altar, the mercy seat. All of it pointing forward. All of it is a shadow.

But now we see the reality.

Copies and the True Thing

Verse 23 speaks of “the copies of the heavenly things” that needed purification with animal blood. The earthly tabernacle was never the real thing. It was a copy, a model of something greater.

God gave Moses the design for the tabernacle on the mountain. But that earthly structure was always pointing beyond itself to the true sanctuary – heaven itself, where God actually dwells.

The old system dealt with copies. Jesus deals with the real thing.

Heaven Itself

Look at verse 24: “Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.”

Jesus didn’t slip into an earthly tent behind a curtain for a few tense minutes. He entered heaven itself. The actual dwelling place of God. And he appears there in God’s presence on our behalf.

This is what the high priest’s yearly entrance into the Most Holy Place was always foreshadowing. But Jesus’ entrance is superior in every way. He didn’t enter with the blood of goats and calves. He entered by his own blood. And he didn’t have to leave. He sat down at the right hand of the Father – never to depart.

He’s there now, appearing before God for us. Our representative. Our intercessor. Our great high priest.

Once For All

Verse 25 makes the contrast clear. Jesus didn’t enter heaven “to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own.” The repetition of the old system proved its inadequacy. Year after year, the high priest had to go back in. Year after year, more blood had to be shed. It was never finished.

But verse 26 declares: Jesus “has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”

Once for all. Not repeated. Not ongoing. Done.

If Jesus had to keep offering himself, he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But that’s unnecessary. His one sacrifice was enough. Sufficient. Complete.

He appeared at the climax of history to put away sin – to remove it, to deal with it decisively – by the sacrifice of himself.

The Good News Is…

The good news is that Jesus has done what needed doing, and he’s done it once for all. You don’t need to wonder if it’s enough. You don’t need to keep bringing sacrifices or performing rituals. Jesus’ blood has opened the way into God’s presence, and his sacrifice has dealt with your sin completely.

He’s in heaven now, appearing before God on your behalf. Your security rests not in what you do, but in what he’s already done. And it will never need repeating.

Reflection

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that Jesus entered heaven itself to appear before you on my behalf. Thank you that his sacrifice was once for all, never needing to be repeated. Help me to rest in the finished work of Christ. In his name, Amen.
