He Sat Down – Hebrews 10:11-14
Oct 30, 2025 185
[11] And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. [12] But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, [13] waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. [14] For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. (ESV)

The Contrast
Hebrews 10:11 paints a picture: every priest stands daily. They’re on their feet because the work is never finished. Day after day, the same sacrifices. Week after week, year after year. Standing, serving, slaughtering, sprinkling blood.
And those sacrifices “can never take away sins.”
Never. Not after a thousand years. Not after ten thousand animals. The work was never complete because it could never be complete.
But verse 12: “When Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God.”
He sat down.
That’s not exhaustion. That’s completion. When you sit down after a job, it means you’re finished. The work is done.
One Sacrifice, Forever Effective
Christ didn’t offer sacrifice after sacrifice. He offered one. A single sacrifice. His own body and blood. And that one sacrifice was enough. Not just for a year. For all time.
He’s not standing at some heavenly altar, repeating his work. He’s seated at the right hand of God—the place of authority, of honour, of completed mission.
Hebrews 10:13 says he’s “waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.” He’s waiting not because there’s more work to do on the cross, but because his victory is still unfolding. His enemies will be subdued. His kingdom will come fully. But the sacrifice? That’s done. Never to be repeated.
You Are Perfected
Here’s the incredible reality of verse 14: “By a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”
Perfected. Not improving. Not getting there. Perfected. Right now. For all time.
If you’re in Christ, you don’t stand before God on the basis of repeated sacrifices or religious efforts. You stand on the basis of his single, sufficient, finished work.
You are perfected because he sat down.
The Good News is…
The good news is that Jesus isn’t still working to make you acceptable to God. His work is finished. You are already perfected through his once-for-all sacrifice. You don’t need to keep striving to earn what’s already been secured. You stand before God, not on shaky ground, but on the solid foundation of Christ’s completed work. And so now that we stand on solid ground, we strive to live a godly life, not to earn acceptance, but because we’ve already been accepted.
Reflection
How does knowing that Christ’s work is finished change the way you approach God today? Where are you tempted to think you need to do more to be acceptable to him?
