Hold Fast

This is the second “let us” statement. And it’s the call to hope.

If the first “let us” was about drawing near to God through faith in Jesus, this one is about holding fast. Keeping going. Not letting go.

The Christian life isn’t a sprint. It’s a marathon. And marathons require endurance. They require hope that looks forward, hope that says, “There’s something better ahead. Keep going.”

Verse 23 says, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.”

Hold fast. That’s active language. It’s not passive. It’s not “coast along and see what happens.” It’s grip tight. Don’t drift. Don’t let circumstances pull you away from what you’ve confessed about Jesus.

The original readers of Hebrews were tempted to drift back. Back to old patterns. Back to the old covenant. Back to thinking they needed to add something to what Jesus had done. And the writer is effectively saying, “No. Hold fast. Don’t waver.”

That temptation is still real today. When life gets hard, when suffering comes, when doubt creeps in, we’re tempted to let go. To stop trusting. To stop hoping.

Don’t.

God Is Faithful

Why can we hold fast? Because “he who promised is faithful.”

This is massive. Our hope isn’t based on our ability to hold on. Our hope is based on God’s character. God keeps his promises. He always has. He always will.

Think about the promises God has made. He’s promised forgiveness through Jesus. He’s promised eternal life. He’s promised that Jesus will return. He’s promised a new creation where there’s no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.

And God doesn’t lie. He doesn’t change his mind. He doesn’t fail to deliver.

That’s why we can hold fast without wavering. Not because we’re strong, but because God is faithful.

Here’s the beautiful thing: we hold fast to him who is holding fast to us. God’s got you. His grip on you is far stronger than your grip on him. So hold on.

The Marathon Ahead

This passage is all about perseverance. About enduring. About keeping the faith when it would be easier to quit.

And let’s be honest – there are times when it feels easier to quit. Times when following Jesus is costly. Times when obedience is hard. Times when you wonder if it’s worth it.

In those moments, you need hope. Hope that looks beyond today. Hope that says, “Jesus is coming back. Everything he’s promised will be ours. This is not the end.”

The writer to the Hebrews knew his readers had endured suffering before. They’d been publicly shamed. They’d had property confiscated. They’d stood with others who were persecuted. And they did it joyfully because they knew they had a “better possession and an abiding one” (Hebrews 10:34, as we’ll see later in the week).

That’s hope. That’s what keeps you going.

And the same hope is ours today. We’re not promised an easy life. But we are promised that God is faithful, that Jesus is returning, and that everything will be made new.

The Good News Is…

The good news is that God is faithful. He keeps his promises. And because of that, you can hold fast to hope without wavering.

You don’t hold fast in your own strength. You hold fast because God holds you. His grip is secure. His promises are certain. His faithfulness never fails.

So keep going. Keep trusting. Keep hoping. The marathon is long, but the finish line is glorious.

We are a community of hope.

Reflection

Where are you tempted to let go? What circumstances are making it hard to keep hoping? Remember today that God is faithful. He who promised will deliver. Hold fast to him who is holding fast to you.
