Who are you looking for?…she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.” – John 20:14

What is the most important question in the world? It is this one: “Who are you looking for?”

Everyone is looking for someone. That might be true in relationships. Women look for the perfect man. While a woman is young she hopes she finds him, and later on she hopes that the one she is with will somehow become him – and vice versa for men. And even those who are happily single are looking for someone who will accept them, love them, and be there for them – in whatever kind of relationship that might be.

Jesus asked the same question of Mary, outside the tomb on resurrection morning. “Who are you looking for?” (John 20:15).

I love the way that Jesus asks questions, because here, on this most important day in the history of the world, Jesus asks the most important question of all.

You see, most of us think that we are looking for things, because if we find those things then they will make us happy. They won’t. Jesus goes to the heart of the matter. God knows that the right answers can only be found when we ask the right questions. God knows that you and I – all of humanity, is looking for someone, not something.

And that someone is Jesus himself.

Here is the wonderful think about that passage in John 20: Mary is distraught because she thinks that they have taken Jesus away, and she doesn’t know where he is. She couldn’t be more wrong, because the one she is looking for was standing right behind her all the time. She simply didn’t recognise him. She was blinded by her tears.

Too often in our times of trouble, we wonder where Jesus is. We pray and cry and plead with God, “Where are you, Jesus? You promised to be with me always! Where are you now, when I need you?”

And blinded, like Mary, by our tears, we fail to recognise that Jesus was with us all along.

The rebuke of the Lord is the gentlest and most beautiful that could ever be imagined. He simply says your name with love that has borne a thousand wounds.
