In July, 1969, Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first humans, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon.
But before taking those historic first steps, Buzz Aldrin slipped out a few items he had smuggled on board: a Bible, a silver chalice, and sacramental bread and wine. There on the moon, his first act was to celebrate communion.
As he observed the heavens and earth from the windows of Discovery, another famous astronaut put it this way,
To look out at this kind of creation and not believe in God is to me impossible. It just strengthens my faith.
Long before the era of astronauts, the psalmist of old also looked up in amazement –
The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
There is neither speech nor language
Where their voice is not heard.
Their line has gone out through all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world. – Psalm 19:1.
The Apostle Paul expanded on this idea in Romans 1. He explained that,
God’s invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse – Romans 1:20.
James Irwin was an astronaut who walked on the moon in 1971, as part of the fourth human lunar landing. Irwin said that his experience exploring the moon on the Apollo 15 mission moved him to devote the rest of his life to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. He is quoted as saying,
God walking on the earth is more important than man walking on the moon.
Wonder of wonders! The creator of the moon and stars became one of us and took His steps on earth so that we can take flight and inhabit the heavens and the earth for eternity.
Indeed, God walking on the earth is incomparably more important than man walking on the moon.
