“Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you like a trap. For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth” (Luke 21:34-35).
The Bible is careful not to reveal God’s exact plans for his second coming to this earth. This hasn’t stopped people arguing and speculating about when and how it will happen. Jesus didn’t encourage this speculation, in fact, he warned against it. But he made it very clear that we should live in a permanent state of expectation – being prepared always for his coming. William Barclay says : “We must live forever in the shadow of eternity, in the certainty that we are men who are fitting or unfitting themselves to appear in the presence of God.”
Jesus gave us the perfect example of this readiness while he was on earth. He spent his days telling people about God’s kingdom, helping them and healing them. But when the crowds had gone, he spent his private time with God, replenishing his strength from the only true source of power and goodness.
The cares of this life have the power to rob us of eternal life if we let them. We need to keep our eyes focused continually upon the Lord Jesus who has promised to provide the daily needs of all who are committed to taking the gospel to people in their part of the world.
