In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).
The opening phrase of the Bible describes the earliest moment of time and the universe. Scientific understanding has increased since then and mankind understands a great deal more about the universe and its laws, but the fact is as clear now as it was then: God created the universe, including the earth, according to the laws of the universe; and God himself is the author of those universal laws.
There was a beginning, and it was achieved by God, acting alone as the originator and ruler of the universe. As such, it was personal: God intended the earth to be, and he intended it to be populated by the people he created. Much depends on that being so.
There is meaning to our existence. Human beings are not the end product of a mindless mechanical process. Intellect, calculation, evaluation, discipline, delight, joy and love—the willingness to give to another—are a reflection of ultimate reality. Existence is profoundly purposeful. There is deep reason to live, serve and love.
