“Jesus said, ‘Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil’” (John 6:70).
Jesus chose Judas because he had the potential to be one of his best disciples. Judas wasn’t a ‘bad’ man. In fact, he was very devout. He had been appointed the treasurer of Jesus’ band of disciples. But he could never quite agree with the way Jesus did things. He was proud, and became bitter because Jesus hadn’t moved to set up his kingdom on earth, with an important place for Judas. He had turned away from Jesus’ path, and was no longer the man who had chosen to accept Jesus’ invitation.
Had Judas chosen Jesus, instead of himself, as Lord, he would have left a legacy of blessing that would have been treasure in heaven. Judas, however, by choosing to work contrary to Jesus, turned himself into a devil. It’s a choice that continues to test many of Jesus’ disciples.
This reminds us that proximity to Jesus isn’t everything. Judas walked with Jesus, saw his miracles, listened to his sermons, but his commitment was to his own interests. Keeping in step with Jesus and remaining on his path means putting him first.
