“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).
The Jewish hierarchy refused to believe that they were not free. Even though they had endured slavery in Egypt and Babylon, even though they were currently living under Roman occupation, they argued that they were free men. Their law forbade slavery. They said they would recognise God and God alone as their King. The reality, of course, was very different. The Jewish leaders might not admit it, but the common people recognised it.
Now here was Jesus telling them that they were all slaves – slaves of sin – and that only he could set them free.
Freedom is the atmosphere of the Kingdom of Heaven. It is a unique freedom because God himself, through Jesus, has bought it at the Cross. A little earlier, Jesus had said: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Later, the apostle Paul said: “but thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became servants of righteousness” (Romans 6:17-20).
No son or daughter of God is a slave to sin. It doesn’t matter whether you are in a bad relationship, or in captivity to a bad habit, or in some addiction, the Spirit of Jesus is well able to set you free from your bondage if you are willing.
