Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had said they would find him. There they met him and worshiped him—but some of them weren’t sure it really was Jesus!
He told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and earth. Therefore go and make disciples in all the nations, baptising them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and then teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you; and be sure of this—that I am with you always, even to the end of the world” (Matt 28:16-20).
Why do we pray so little? It isn’t because we don’t want to pray. We do.
Two aspects of prayer are praise and thankfulness, then come our requests. A third aspect of prayer is listening – do we stay with God following our prayer? Do we wait to listen to what He is wanting to say to us? Otherwise it is a one-way discussion. We ask, thank, and then go about our business. Why? Because we are very busy people. We have much to do, possibly even for the Lord. We can be very busy.
This is a trap that the devil loves to watch happening, watching till we burn ourselves out, fall sick, or just become bitter and twisted because we’ve worked so hard and nothing went as we had planned.
How do we listen? Obviously by being quiet. Listening for thoughts and ideas to come, sifting out what is human and what is from God.
How do we do this? We imagine God is right beside us as a friend. This requires a certain amount of practice. Some thoughts to help us along that path.
God never leaves us, He is our friend. He is right here now, and wanting to have a speaking relationship with us. He can’t do this unless we are quiet, listening. Communing with Him. Do nothing until he has cemented it in your heart. Make your decisions on your knees.
The Lord has given us promises – He will fulfil them, unless we decide to pre-empt Him and do it in our own strength. In Matthew 28:16-20 are His final promises to us: He assured us of his power, He gave us a commission, and He promised us his presence.
He has promised; He hears and He answers. He is our friend.
