Do not let my words out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life (Proverbs 4:21-23).
The Lord’s counsel here, through Solomon, is a matter of life and death. You are advised to keep God’s word within your view at all times. How should you do this? The secret is to have God’s word within your heart. To have God himself within your heart is to have his word operating in you. God’s word operating within you is the secret to peace of mind, and a wholesome and balanced life.
“Above all else” the Lord counsels you to “guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” If you are at peace with the Lord, yourself and the world, you will not be consumed by out-of-control stress; you will have abundant energy, and you will enjoy the fullness of life.
Christopher had been referred by his doctor to a psychiatrist because he was so hyped up he had not been sleeping well. His anxiety was tearing him apart. Fortunately his psychiatrist, who was a devoted follower of the Lord Jesus, recommended that Christopher spend time with the Lord every day, through prayer and the reading of his word. Christopher did so and was blessed.
You, too, will be blessed if you also spend time with the Lord each day.
