A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham (Matthew 1:1).
Here the first Gospel begins with the credentials of the promised Messiah; the one who would redeem the world; who would establish his eternal kingdom for anyone who would seek citizenship therein. Here was the God of the universe with a human ancestry: as the Gospel of John says, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (1:14).
Jesus came to live and die for each of us so that we, as the repentant thief who was crucified with him, could become permanent citizens in Paradise by faith in him (Luke 23:42-43).
Have you grasped the significance of Jesus’ offer of a permanent home in Paradise to those who repent and accept him as their Saviour? Through your connection with Jesus by faith you have that assurance. No one can rob you of the salvation that Jesus gives you. It’s yours forever. Rest in that assurance as the apostle John rested on the breast of his Saviour (John 13:25; 21:20). There is no safer place; no one can disturb you there; no one can lever you away from your Saviour. Jesus will not permit it, for he has come to find you and to save you. He, the good Shepherd, went out into the night of this dark world to find you, his one lost sheep (Matthew 18:12-13). Your doubts are not powerful enough to over-ride such demonstrable love. You may rest in the full assurance that your name is written in bold, indelible letters in his book of life.
