Ingabire Finds Freedom From the Past – Kigali, Rwanda

“Now I have found Christ”

“I was at one-week camp meeting and after my last sermon the translator informed me that someone had requested to talk to me. Tired after an hour and half of preaching, I was going to suggest we speak later that day. But something told me it could be urgent, so I decided to speak with the person straight away.”

The woman’s name was Ingabire, a 23 year old former university student. Her friend had dragged her to church hoping that that she would find some hope for her broken life.

At the end of last year Ingabire had been expelled from the university campus after she and her boyfriend were caught in possession of illegal drugs. After this her uncle, who had been paying for her school fees as both her parents had died, stopped taking care of her. She spent the following six months trying to atone for her mistakes, hoping that her uncle would forgive her and offer her a second chance. But this was in vain. When she could no longer endure the punishment, she went and stayed with her former classmate, Mrs Habelimana.

She hopes to be a committed believer, a life she had come to admire after observing the family life of her friend.

Mrs Habelimana is a devoted member of a Christian church and through her, Ingabire had come to open her heart to Christ. With her she had come to the meetings. When I spoke with Ingabire, she told me she was going back to university but was afraid that she would make another mistake that would completely destroy her life. With tears in her eyes, she said,

Sometimes I lose control of my life and do things…but now I have found Christ, I just want him to take control of my life.

Ingabire wanted to speak to me to seek prayer and counsel. She told me that she could not remember the last time she had prayed or gone to church but hopes to be a committed believer, a life she had come to admire after observing the family life of her friend. In two months time, she will be going back to school and requested direction on where to worship.
