Life Recovery Devotions StepWeek 8 Day 5 – Amends Do it at the Right Time

“There is a right time for everything” (Eccl. 3:1, TLB).

The wisdom and timely (pun intended) advice the verse for today contains, will help you realise that when you are willing to make your amends to others, you will have to factor whether it is the right time or not, to make those amends. Timing really is everything with regards to making your amends.

You may be nervous, wanting to put things off indefinitely or you’re at the other end of the spectrum wanting to get your amends over before the day is over. I would suggest that you take the middle ground here. Let the words from today’s verse be your guide. Ask yourself the question: “Is it the right time?”

You’re going to need courage to make your amends, especially when this will involve face-to-face contact with the person that you’ve hurt in some way. You’re going to have to be bold when you make your amends, but most of all you’re going to have to make your amends at the right time. This is where you need to spend time with God in prayer, asking Him for His guidance to show you and lead you to the right time and place to make your amends.

You read early this week about you being the main beneficiary after making your amends. However, there is a further principle you need to be mindful before deciding to make your amends. Don’t make your amends, if by doing so, you cause that person or others harm. If that’s the case, then it’s not about you but them. Follow the teaching that says, “Don’t just think about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too” (Phil. 2:4); this verse will guide you to help you follow the correct course of action, depending on the specific situation you’re facing at that time.

Personal Reflection: Have you decided to make your amends to someone? Is it the right time to do so? Will making your amends to that person cause them harm or harm to others involved? Take some time-out and consult God through prayer. Ask Him to guide you and show you when it’s the right time to make your amends to a specific person(s).
