Step/Week 6, Day 4 – Ready: Accept the Change
May 6, 2020 1099
“Obey God because you are His children; don’t slip back into your old ways—doing evil because you knew no better” (1Pt. 1:14, TLB).
Accepting help can be a real problem for addicts. There is this behaviour that promotes self-reliance, but when one is lost in the spiral of addictions, it becomes a false reliance. The reality of the situation is that you’re not well enough to effect change in your life, without God’s intervention.
You probably know all to well, what character defects you need changing, but knowing is not enough, you have to get to the place of acceptance. Meaning, when God starts to work on your character defects, you have to accept the process and the changes to your character that are a direct result of that process.
Obedience to God is a positive character trait of a son or daughter of God, as today’s verse eludes to. Your willingness to obey Him will help you trust and accept the changes He wants to do in your life. The verse also shows you a warning. You always need to be on your guard. Be alert! You know what your weak points are that might lead you to your “old ways”. Be aware of the warning signs. You will need to deal with them, if they arise, because you know better than you did at the beginning of your recovery journey. God has been teaching you His ways, so that you know what to do in any given situation.

Personal Reflection: You may be aware of the changes happening within you. God is working on your character defects. Accept those changes and be thankful to Him, as He does His work in your life.
