Step/Week 4, Day 2 – Spiritual Inventory and Confess: Seek God

“Don’t copy the behavio[u]r and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how His ways will really satisfy you” (Rom. 12:2, TLB).

If you have been brutal and totally honest with yourself, then your spiritual inventory will reflect who you are at this present moment in time. You’ve probably been copying the behaviour and customs of the world around you, but now it’s time to change and accept the person God wants you to be from now on. It’s also time to confess your sins.

We will use an acrostic of CONFESS to help us through the process. The first letter, C, stands for CONFESS your shortcomings, resentments and sins. If like me, when I made my spiritual inventory, it did not make for pleasant reading. But that’s the point, it’s not meant to look pretty or read nicely.

Through our journey of addiction, we have all made many mistakes. We have sinned against others but more importantly, we have sinned against God. This is a serious thing because sin (unconfessed) creates a chasm between us and God. We have followed the ways of the world and not God’s ways. We need to re-learn from God and His ways, so that our satisfaction and contention can be found in God and not our addictions.

We need to seek God’s forgiveness, so that our relationship with Him can be restored. God sent His only Son to the Cross, to die for you and your sins (past, present and future), so that, having rose from the grave on the third day, you can now approach God and ask Him to forgive you. And you know what? He’s willing to do that each time for you, daily, when you seek Him with a repentant heart.

Personal Reflection: Will you seek God with all your heart, body, mind, and spirit? Are you ready to confess your shortcomings, resentments and sins to God? Are you willing to have Him change you into the person He intended you to be?
