You Are Still With Me

You Are Still With Me

Have you ever thought about sleep? I mean, really thought about it? It is quite amazing. I know there are good physiological explanations, but just well a moment in the mystery.

Just consider. You close your eyes and then you know nothing about what is going on around you. The world could literally change overnight and you wouldn’t know it. And then, mysteriously, at  a point in the morning, your consciousness returns,  your eyes open and you get up and continue your life. It happens seven times a week, 365 times a year. It’s like being dead and then being raised back to life!

While you are asleep you aren’t engaged with the world around you. It’s like you’re not all there. In fact, your mind could be elsewhere, in your dreams! And, since you aren’t conscious, what mysterious prompting do you obey that tells you to wake up in the morning?

When you go through the night, he is still with you.

But the Psalms, David observes what for him is the most amazing thing of all. He says,

…when I wake up,
    you are still with me!
 (Psalm 139:18b, NLT)

I will confess to you that this morning, when I woke up, my first thought wasn’t of God. The thoughts that went through my mind were about the things that I had to do today. Yet God is so faithful, that there he was, right there with me!

Every evening, when your conscious thoughts disconnect from the world, he is still with you. Every morning, when you wake up, God is right where he was before. He is still with you.

Acknowledge the presence of the Lord in your life.

Just as the rhythm of every day as its sequences of light and of darkness, so too with life. There will be times of light and joy in your life, and there will be times of darkness and sadness. But when you go through the darkness, he is still with you. When you go through the night, he is still with you.

Every one of us is mortal. Every one of us will traverse the valley of death, the darkest night of all. Here is a beautiful truth. He is still with you, and he will lead you into the green pastures of his kingdom.

So, acknowledge the presence of the Lord in your life. Acknowledge his presence in your moments of joy and in your times of gloom. Acknowledge his presence when your head rests upon your pillow as you close your eyes. And acknowledge his presence when you wake. Because he is still with you.

We have routines when we get up in the mornings. Open our eyes, go use the bathroom, reach for our phones, check social media to see what we missed. We should make our routine be as we rise, thank God for giving us the blessing to open our eyes and create a praise and worship before taking on anything else. This sets the tone and mood for the rest of the day.
