Angels Are Awesome… But Jesus Is More Awesome
Aug 12, 2025 20
When Hebrews 1 tells us that Jesus is greater than the angels, it’s not trying to downplay angels. The opposite is true. Before we can appreciate the glory of Christ, the writer wants us to feel the weight of just how glorious angels really are.
In the Bible, angels are a big deal. They appear hundreds of times across both the Old and New Testaments. They are not chubby cherubs or harmless mascots. They are mighty, holy, awe-inspiring beings. And while Hebrews 13 tells us that some have “entertained angels unawares,” meaning they sometimes appear in ordinary human form, most of the angels described in Scripture could never be mistaken for an ordinary person. If you encountered one, you’d be tempted to fall on your face in fear and awe.

Let’s look at two of their key functions in the Bible — functions that show their glory and set us up to see why Jesus is even greater.
1/ ANGELS WORSHIP AND PRAISE GOD
One of the clearest roles of angels in the Bible is to worship God. In Isaiah 6, the prophet sees the Lord seated on His throne, high and lifted up, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Around Him stand the seraphim, each with six wings — covering their faces, covering their feet, and flying. And they cry out to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3 ESV)
This is a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the throne room of heaven. These angels are magnificent — and yet their entire focus is on the holiness and glory of God. The most awe-inspiring creatures you could imagine are themselves in awe of Him.
2/ ANGELS DELIVER GOD’S WORD
Another key role of angels is to deliver God’s message to His people. In Acts 7:38, Stephen speaks of how an angel spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai when he received “living oracles” to give to Israel. In verse 53, he says the Law was “delivered by angels.”
Angels also appear in the prophets to reveal the future — think of Gabriel speaking to Daniel (Daniel 9–10) or to Zechariah and Mary in Luke 1, announcing the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. These are not random appearances; God entrusts His messengers to angels, and when they speak, they speak with His authority.
BUT THERE IS ONE WHO IS MORE AWESOME
Angels are awesome. Their worship is pure. Their words carry the weight of heaven. They stand in the presence of God, and they go out to do His bidding with power and glory.
But here’s the point we’ll keep coming back to this week: as glorious as angels are, they are not the Son of God. They worship Him. They serve Him. They carry out His will. Their greatness only magnifies His.
Tomorrow we’ll see two more key functions of angels that show their glory — and then later in the week, we’ll look straight at why Jesus is more awesome still.
Reflection:
Thank God for the glory and power of His angels — and then remember that the One they worship is your Saviour. Ask God to grow your awe of Christ as you see the glory of those who serve Him.
