While being interviewed for an article in Wired magazine, Sean Carroll, a theoretical physicist with a special interest in theories relating to time said, ”Yesterday, I went to the future and here I am”. Standing at the freshest point of 2016, all of us can equally say, “Last year we headed for 2016 and here we are.” One day the Bible promises we will be able to say, “I headed for eternity and here I am.”
Ready or not, want it or not, time only goes forward and never back. Significantly, we can make choices that affect the future but we can never make choices that affect the past. Knowing fully that no time machine can take you into the past and change any single circumstance or action, the Bible has this to say:
…but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:13,14).
Whatever is past has moved beyond our reach. At any moment in our lives we are either prisoners of our past, or architects of our future. Earthly-wise, we have no guarantee as to whether our plans will succeed or come to fruition. But building a future with God comes with an eternal warranty signed by the blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Point your compass of faith in the direction of eternity as you step into 2016 and determine not to waste energy on things that you can’t do anything about. Concentrate on the One who holds all power in heaven and earth and upholds all things by the word of His power (Mt. 28:19; Heb. 1:3) Press towards the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Make the coming of Jesus your “blessed hope” (Titus 2:13) and remember that you have treasure laid up in heaven. (Mt. 6:19)
