Be Boastful!

Be Boastful

Be boastful! The rule of the world is that you need to highlight your strengths to others, because if you don’t, no one else is going to do it. But the kingdom of God is different to the principles by which our society functions.

Boasting isn’t meant to be good, but there is one thing about which Jesus tells us we should be boastful!

God seems to be always telling us in the Bible to be humble and not to boast. Yet at the same time, we can go through the world with confidence and an unshakeable identity. How can we reconcile these two ideas?

While it is a paradox, it is this very reality that allows a person to be truly humble. You see, if you depend on Jesus and rest in his care, then you don’t have to be smart enough or strong enough. The pressure isn’t on you anymore.

In the kingdom of God, being a winner in life doesn’t look like it does in the world.

This is why, in the kingdom of God, the humblest people are typically also those who navigate life with the greatest confidence and assurance.

In the kingdom of God, being a winner in life doesn’t look like it does in the kingdoms of this world at all. This principle is best illustrated through what happened at Calvary. The society of the day celebrated strength and success. To all appearances, the crucifixion of Jesus was a total defeat, in which Jesus was exposed as completely weak against the forces of the empire and of evil.

Appearances, however, were very misleading. Because what happened at Calvary was not a massive failure. The Cross was the pivotal triumph of good over evil, of life over death, and the establishment of the basis of Jesus’ everlasting dominion and kingdom. The emergence of living Jesus from the tomb changed all reality and time, forever.

This points us toward the one thing, and only one thing, that we should be exceedingly boastful about. See if you can pick it out in this passage from the Bible:

This is what the Lord says:
“Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom,
or the powerful boast in their power,
or the rich boast in their riches.
24 But those who wish to boast
    should boast in this alone:
that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord
    who demonstrates unfailing love
and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth,
and that I delight in these things…
(Jer. 9:23:24.)

The most confident people on earth are those who know who Jesus is.

We are to boast in the fact that we understand who the Lord is, and that we know him.

When people know who Jesus is, as their Saviour, Lord, and friend, they’re going to be the most confident people on earth! How could they not be confident when you know that you are completely understood, yet totally loved; totally known, yet completely saved. You always have a source of unlimited identity and love that will always be there for you.

When you really know who the Lord is, you can approach any circumstance and every relationship with the assurance that despite how bleak things may look and feel, you are always going to be a winner in the end.

The apostle Peter was a great example of this. He started off being boastful about all the wrong things. He boasted that even if all the disciples abandoned Jesus, he would never do it (Matt. 26:33). And then a few hours later, Peter denied Jesus.

But Peter continued growing, and the more he got to know Jesus, the humbler he became about himself personally, and the more confident he became in life. It was all because he had learnt to boast about the right things. He had learnt to boast about what how great his Saviour was and what Jesus had done for him.

If you’ve discovered this for yourself, then by all means, go ahead! Be boastful!

Amen! Our security comes from knowing Jesus who saved us! "In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Phil. 1:4-6, NIV)
