“When I consider the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him . . . ?” (Psalm 8:4).
Several thousand years accumulated scientific knowledge has not diluted the sentiment expressed by the ancient man of faith. Indeed, those who know most about the physical structure of things—at both macro and micro levels—express utter of admiration and wonder at the immensity and the intricacy of its workings. The human intellect has when expanded, but so has the cosmos. We are as small as ever; maybe smaller. One of the greatest conceptions accessible to our contemplation is the idea that back of the universe, a mind contemplates us—watchful, attentive, thoughtful.
