Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger; that second day of the month he did not eat, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David.
1 Samuel 20:24
Anger, is not of itself an evil thing. It is an emotional response which is God-given, but it can be an evil if misused or misapplied. Some sons are angry with their father’s for no other reason than bare rebellion or jealousy over the father’s treatment of a sibling (see the elder brother in Luke 15). Such anger is unjustified and destructive. Jonathan’s anger at his father’s treatment of David was appropriate. Saul was wrong. He sought to oppress and kill David who was innocent. Jonathan’s anger was born of his decision to protect the weak from the strong. It was the anger of the righteous, and there is not enough of that in the world.
