. . . Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If he asks you this, then say to him, ‘Also your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead’.

Skilled fighter and commander of armies that he was, king David would never have sent his fighting men so close to a city wall. Such a tactic was folly because it was too easy for the archers on the wall to hit their attackers with their arrows.  But he was willing to make an exception in t his instance because he wanted one of his best soldiers to be killed. We know why.  The king had committed adultery with Uriah’s wife, and he wanted to take her from him. How quickly evil multiplies.  Having wallowed in a rotting carcase, a dog’s appetite for another is whet.  A wickedness deeds pursued,  make other vices less forbidden.
