“As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him” (John 13:27).
Judas knew that Jesus knew the evil plot that was in his mind. But he also knew, by receiving the morsel of food from Jesus, that Jesus still loved him, because this food was the symbol of friendship. Judas could have repented at that moment, confessed and received Jesus’ forgiveness. But he did not.
For us, the eating of communion bread should signify Jesus entering into our lives. For us too, it is the symbol of Jesus’ love, friendship and forgiveness.
In rejecting Jesus’ love Judas opened the door to Satan. If he didn’t want Jesus to rule over him, then the only alternative was to have Satan as his master. The same choice faces each of us.
