“As he was about to go the cross Jesus said, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me’” (John 14:1).
No wonder the disciples’ hearts were troubled. Jesus had just told Peter that he would deny his master before the morning. How wonderful that his next words to all his disciples gathered around him were words of reassurance that they should not be troubled, but should trust in God and in him.
They were about to witness unimaginably terrible events, but they should never lose their faith in God. How extraordinary, also, that Jesus could comfort his disciple in this way as he faced the ordeal of the Cross!
“I know you trust in God,” said Jesus. “Then trust also in me even when everything seems to turn to custard. Trust in me when I am lying lifeless in the tomb. Trust in me when it is the hardest thing to do. I won’t betray that kind of trust. Ever!”
