“Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognising him” (Luke 24:15-16).
This story set on the road to the village of Emmaus, is the longest post-resurrection story in the Bible and it has some important truths to impart to us. Notice that the Bible story doesn’t tell us that they didn’t recognise Jesus, but that “they were kept from recognising him”.
What kept them from recognising Jesus, with whom they had associated every day of the previous three years? It appears that they were so absorbed in their grief, so convinced that their dream of the Messiah was shattered, that they could not see their risen Lord.
How often has Jesus walked with us on the road of heart-breaking disappointment, and we “were kept from recognizing him”? When we are devastated by grief he walks alongside us and wipes the tears from our eyes. He sustains us through our temporal disappointments with the promise of a future far, far better than our past.
