“Repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in Jesus’ name to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47).
When Jesus said this, he was standing with his followers in the upper room. They had gathered there, wondering what to do next; Cleopas and his companion arrived to tell their wonderful story, when suddenly, Jesus was in their midst. He had reassured them, showed them his hands and feet to prove it was really he himself, and he had eaten with them. He reminded them, as he had reminded Cleopas and his companion on the road to Emmaus, that the Bible had prophesied his death and resurrection.
Because Jesus died as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:1-2), the message can now be preached to all nations that every person who is sick of evil and wants to be free from their burden of guilt, is offered forgiveness through the living Christ.
This gospel is “good news” because it transforms people. It replaces their negatives with positives, their despair with hope, their sadness with joy, and gives purpose to their lives. There is no better calling than that given you by Jesus: to share this good news with others. And what gives you the ability to do this? Jesus told his followers to wait, because he was sending “the promise of my Father to you … you will be clothed with power from on high.” This is the secret of God’s power in your life.
