Hebrews 3:7–11
[7] Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, [8] do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, [9] where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. [10] Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ [11] As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” (ESV)
When Psalm 95 was first sung, it warned Israel not to repeat the stubborn unbelief of the wilderness generation. But Hebrews tells us something striking: that same psalm is still speaking now. The writer introduces it with the words, “Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says…” (Heb. 3:7). Notice the present tense. The Spirit is not only the author of ancient Scripture but the living God who speaks through it today.

That means when you open your Bible, it isn’t dusty history. It is the voice of God Himself calling you to trust Him afresh. “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts…” (v. 7–8). The wilderness generation had seen God’s mighty acts – the plagues, the Red Sea crossing, manna from heaven – and yet they doubted His goodness. They tested Him, grumbled, and rebelled against Him. The tragic result was that they never entered the rest God had promised.
The lesson is sobering. It is possible to witness God’s works, taste His goodness, and still fall away through unbelief. That’s why Hebrews presses the warning with such urgency. David Peterson puts it plainly in his commentary: “You can hear God speaking to you when you listen to this Psalm!” (TNTC, p. 111).
So how do we avoid their mistake? By softening our hearts to God’s voice rather than hardening them. By allowing His Word to shape our desires and direct our choices. By remembering the gospel, we recall that Jesus has already faced the wilderness of testing and prevailed. He trusted His Father perfectly, even when it led Him to the cross. Through His death and resurrection, He has opened the way into God’s rest.
God is speaking… through His Word, by His Spirit, even today. Our part is to listen with faith and respond with obedience. Don’t let unbelief rob you of the rest Christ has already won.
Reflection:
What is one step of trust or obedience you can take today in response to God’s living word?
