The Faithful Son Over The House — Hebrews 3:5–6a

Aug 28, 2025 2

Yesterday, we saw that Jesus is greater than Moses because He is the builder of the house, not just part of it. Today, Hebrews sharpens the contrast even further: Moses was faithful as a servant, but Jesus is faithful as the Son.

Hebrews 3:5–6a says:

“Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son.”

Moses the Servant

Moses played a remarkable role in God’s plan. He was faithful as a servant. God used him to lead His people, to give His law, and to establish patterns of worship and sacrifice. He spoke words from God that pointed forward to something greater that was coming.

But notice the language: Moses was a servant in God’s house. He was part of the household. He was inside the building project of God’s people. And even though he pointed forward, he could never bring the fulfilment himself.

Jesus the Son

Jesus, on the other hand, is faithful over God’s house as the Son. The servant may be honoured, but the Son has the higher place. The servant looks after the household, but the Son owns the household. The servant testifies to what is coming, but the Son is the one who brings it.

And unlike Moses, Jesus didn’t need the sacrificial system for His own sin. His life was perfectly faithful. His thoughts, His words, and His deeds were always in alignment with His Father. That’s why His once-for-all sacrifice is enough. That’s why He can reign as the Son over the house of God.

What This Means for Us

The difference between servant and Son isn’t just a technical detail. It’s a reminder that our hope isn’t in human leaders, no matter how faithful they might be. Our hope isn’t in the law, or the system, or the shadows. Our hope is in the Son of God, who reigns over the house and who brings us into God’s family.

That’s why Hebrews keeps pressing us: don’t drift back. Don’t let go. Don’t settle for the servant when the Son has come.

So today, as you think about your faith, don’t settle for shadows, rituals, or human leaders. Be thankful for the servants God has used along the way, but remember that Jesus is better. He is the Son over the house. And in Him, we belong.

Reflection

Where are you tempted to put your trust in “servants” – good leaders, traditions, or systems – instead of holding fast to Jesus, the Son over God’s house?
