The Final and Complete Word in Hebrews 1:2

“But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.” (Hebrews 1:2 ESV)

The God who spoke creation into being, who revealed Himself through the prophets, has now spoken in the clearest and most decisive way possible. He has spoken by His Son.

The writer to the Hebrews is making a deliberate contrast. Long ago, many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets. But now, in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son.

“In these last days” is Bible language for the time between Jesus’ first coming and His return. It is where we live right now. In this time, God’s word to the world is final, complete, and sufficient in Jesus.

That does not mean God cannot speak in other ways. God is drawing many people to Christ through remarkable means, even dreams and visions, particularly in parts of the world where the Bible is hard to access. Yet everything we need to know about God, His purposes, and how to be right with Him is already given to us in Christ and in His Word.

Here is where authority matters. All of us live under competing voices telling us what to believe and how to live. Our own experiences. Our church traditions. Human reasoning. These can all have value, but they can never sit over God’s Word.

If our experiences contradict Scripture, it is our experiences that must change. If a tradition contradicts Scripture, it is the tradition that must be reformed. If our reasoning leads us to explain away miracles, soften what the Bible says about sin, or deny the resurrection, it is our reasoning that is wrong, not the Word of God.

Why? Because God has spoken fully and finally by His Son. There is no higher authority. There is no further revelation to wait for.

The church in every generation is tempted to drift from this. Sometimes it happens slowly. We start giving more weight to the voice of culture, to the comfort of human approval, or our own “truth.” But the moment we put any other voice on the same level as the Word of Christ, we have stopped listening to the One who rules over all.

Hebrews 1 is clear. God has spoken by His Son. His word is final. His word is complete. His word is enough.

Reflection

Thank God that His Word is final and trustworthy. Ask Him to help you weigh every experience, tradition, and opinion against the truth revealed in His Son. Open Hebrews 1:1–4 and thank Him that He has spoken, and that in Christ we have everything we need.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for taking a moment to consider this personal message from me.

The world is full of consumers, and that’s true of spiritual content as well. It’s all take, take, and more taking. But the message of Jesus, and the lives of those who follow him, will be characterized by giving. I want to invite you to consider not just being a hearer of the Word, but an even greater doer of the Word than you already are.

Did you know that today, 93,206 people will be reached with the Gospel by our ministry? That’s only possible because people like you decided to share the Gospel message by giving to GNU. Every dollar you give helps us to reach at least one person with the Gospel. Your gift, no matter how small or how large, is valuable to Christ.

Yes, I want to help reach people for Jesus!

Grace and Peace
