Hebrews 8:8-11

[8] For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, [9] not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord. [10] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. [11] And they shall not teach, each one his neighbour and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.” (ESV)

Written on Hearts

God promised through Jeremiah that a new covenant was coming. And it would be different.

The old covenant was written on stone tablets. External. The law came from outside, commanding obedience.

But verse 10 says God will “put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts.”

This is a transformation from the inside out. Not rules you strain to follow, but a new heart that wants to obey. God doesn’t just give commands – he gives the desire and power to keep them.

Knowing God Personally

Verse 11 promises something stunning: “They shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.”

Not secondhand knowledge. Not relying on someone else to tell you about God. Direct, personal knowledge of the Lord.

In the old covenant, you needed priests and teachers to mediate. But in the new covenant, every believer – from the least to the greatest – knows God personally.

The Good News Is…

This new covenant isn’t theoretical. Jesus has inaugurated it through his death and resurrection. Through his Spirit, God has written his law on your heart. You don’t just know about God – you know him.

You’re not striving to obey from the outside in. God is transforming you from the inside out. He’s given you a new heart, and he’s making himself known to you personally.

That’s the promise. And God keeps every promise he makes.

Reflection

Thank you, Lord, that you’ve written your law on my heart and given me the privilege of knowing you personally. Help me live in the reality of this new covenant today. Amen.
