Going On to Maturity – Hebrews 6:1-3

Hebrews 6:1-3

[1] Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, [2] and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. [3] And this we will do if God permits. (ESV)

Don’t Keep Re-laying the Foundation

The basics of the Christian faith are essential – repentance, faith, resurrection, judgment (vv1-2). They’re foundational truths that we never abandon. But we aren’t meant to spend our whole lives circling the foundation, digging it up and laying it down again. Foundations are meant to be built upon.

The call of Hebrews is clear: let’s go on to maturity. Don’t stay stuck rehearsing the basics. Move forward into deeper knowledge of Christ, greater obedience, and more fruitful service.

Growing by God’s Grace

Notice the tension in verse 3, “And this we will do if God permits.” Maturity is something we pursue with effort and intention, but it’s also entirely dependent on God’s grace. We are responsible to press forward, yet we can only grow because He is at work within us.

This keeps us from pride when we make progress, and from despair when we feel weak. Our confidence isn’t in our ability to build, but in the God who gives the growth.

Rooted in Christ

Moving forward never means moving on from Jesus. He is the foundation. He is the one who calls us to repentance, gives us faith, secures our resurrection through His resurrection, and will one day judge the living and the dead. We don’t leave those truths behind – we build our lives on them. By His Spirit, He leads us on toward maturity, shaping us into His likeness until the day He returns.

Reflection

Lord, help me to press on to maturity. Keep me from circling the same ground, and grow me deeper in Christ – my foundation, my Saviour, and my hope.
