He Ever Lives to Intercede – Hebrews 7:23–25

[23] The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, [24] but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. [25] Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. (ESV)

A Priest Who Never Stops Working
Every priest in Israel had an expiry date. They served for a time, offered their sacrifices, and then died. Their prayers stopped; their ministry ended.
But not Jesus. He holds His priesthood permanently because He continues forever. Death couldn’t stop Him. The empty tomb means His work is not only finished – it keeps on working.
That’s why He is able to save to the uttermost. Not halfway. Not until you mess up again. Completely, eternally, without remainder.
When You Feel Far From God
We all know the ache of distance – when something once close drifts apart. It might be a friend, a family member, or a spouse. It hurts when a relationship turns cold.
But far more tragic is to be distant from the God who gives life and breath and everything. And that’s where sin leaves us – far off.
The good news? Jesus, our great high priest, has already drawn near to us. His intercession bridges the gap. It’s not about what we do to climb back toward Him; it’s trusting what He’s done to draw near to us.
Right now, He lives to make intercession for you. This is not a polite thought or distant sympathy. It’s active, ongoing, and personal. When your faith wobbles, when your sin shames you, when your prayers dry up – His don’t.
To the Uttermost
Dane Ortlund captures it beautifully in Gentle and Lowly:
“To the uttermost” in Hebrews 7:25 means: God’s forgiving, redeeming, restoring touch reaches down into the darkest crevices of our souls, those places where we are most ashamed, most defeated. More than this: those crevices of sin are themselves the places where Christ loves us the most. His heart willingly goes there. His heart is most strongly drawn there. He knows us to the uttermost, and he saves us to the uttermost, because his heart is drawn out to us to the uttermost. We cannot sin our way out of his tender care.”
Jesus’ prayers reach the places we try to hide. His heart goes toward, not away from, our weakness. His love runs deepest where our need is greatest.
The Good News Is…
Your assurance doesn’t rest on how tightly you hold on to God; it rests on how tightly Jesus holds on to you.
He doesn’t just forgive; He keeps you.
He doesn’t just open the way; He prays you all the way home.
So when shame says you’re too far gone, when your faith feels faint, when you forget to pray, remember this: He ever lives to intercede for you. Because He lives forever, you will too.
Reflection
Take a quiet moment and thank the Father that Jesus’ prayers for you never stop. Ask Him to help you draw near again today – resting not in your effort, but in Christ’s ongoing, unstoppable intercession.
