Hebrews chapter one begins with one of the most breathtaking openings in all of Scripture.

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son.”

The God who made the heavens and the earth… speaks. And he hasn’t just spoken in vague ideas or unintelligible riddles. He’s spoken clearly, personally, in ways people could understand. In the Old Testament, he spoke through the prophets. He gave visions and dreams. Burning bushes and booming voices. His word came again and again to His people.

But now… something far greater has happened. In these last days, God has spoken to us by His Son, Jesus Christ. This is the final word. The complete word. The sufficient word. You don’t need to look anywhere else to know what God is like, what God wants, or where you stand with Him. Everything we need to hear from God is found in Jesus.

The first readers of Hebrews needed to hear that. They were under pressure. Life had become hard. Following Jesus was costly. Some were tempted to give up and go back to the old ways they knew before — the safety of their traditions, the familiarity of the old covenant. Hebrews was written to say: Don’t give up. Keep trusting Jesus. Why? Because Jesus is better.

Jesus is better than the Prophets. Jesus is better than the Priests. Jesus is better than the Kings. He’s the Better Prophet, because he’s God’s final word. He’s the Better Priest, because he made purification for sins once and for all. And he’s the Better King, because he is enthroned at the right hand of God, ruling all things forever and ever.

In just a few verses, Hebrews 1:2‑4 gives us eight reasons why Christ is enough. He’s the heir of all things. He created the world. He’s the radiance of God’s glory. The exact imprint of His nature. He upholds the universe by the word of His power. He made purification for sins. He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. And he’s superior to angels.

When you see Him like this, you realise, there is no other voice worth listening to above His. No one else compares.

And so across this week, we’re going to slow down and unpack this together. We’ll see the God who speaks. We’ll look at why Jesus is the final word. We’ll take time to explore why he is enough. We’ll consider what it means to stand on His word when it’s under pressure. And we’ll finish with how we can listen, look, and love Him with our whole lives.

My prayer for you this week is simple: that as we spend time in Hebrews 1:1‑4, your vision of Jesus will grow bigger. You’ll see more of His glory. You’ll treasure more of His grace. And you’ll be more convinced than ever that Jesus truly is better.
