Have you ever been tempted to give up following Jesus?

That’s not just a throwaway question. It’s one we’ll keep coming back to in our daily devotional series in Hebrews. This part of the Bible was written for this very reason – to speak to Christians in precisely that situation. The surrounding culture opposed their faith in Jesus, their families disagreed with their convictions, and persecution was only ever a knock at the door away. With that type of pressure, the temptation was real to step back from following Jesus.

These first readers were Jewish Christians, people who had grown up with the Old Testament Scriptures, the temple, the sacrifices, and the promises to Abraham and David. And now they’d come to trust in Jesus, the promised Messiah. But following Him had brought them hardship. It would have been easy to tone things down, to downplay His uniqueness, to quietly drift back into the old ways of life.

The clear message of Hebrews is this: Don’t give up. Keep following Jesus.

Why? Because Jesus is better. Better than anything this world can offer. Better than anything any other religion or worldview can offer. Better than any angelic being you could possibly imagine.

In Hebrews 1:5–2:4, the preacher shows us that angels are awesome… but Jesus is more awesome!

Now, angels aren’t something we think about much in everyday conversation. But in the Bible, they are a big deal. They appear hundreds of times. They worship God in His throne room, they deliver His Word to His people, they minister to believers, and they will be His agents in the final judgment. They are mighty, holy, awe-inspiring beings. With most of the angels described in the Bible, if you encountered one, you wouldn’t mistake it for an ordinary person; you’d be tempted to fall on your face in fear and awe.

And yet, here’s the point: even angels worship Jesus.

The Son of God has a better name than any angel; “Son of God” is not a title they have ever been given. He has greater honour than the angels, for they worship Him, not the other way around. He has a higher status than the angels; they are servants, but He is sovereign. He has a greater existence than the angels, being eternal and unchanging, while they are created and dependent. And He has a greater vocation than the angels, for He reigns at the Father’s right hand, while they are sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.

And even though He is infinitely higher than them, He stooped lower – lower than the angels. He took on flesh, lived a perfect life, suffered, died, and rose again – so that sinners like us could be forgiven, restored, and given eternal life. That is the heart of the gospel: salvation is not something we can earn or achieve; it is a gift from God, given freely through Jesus Christ, received by faith.

That’s why Hebrews 2 warns us,

“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it… how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?” (Hebrews 2:1, 3 ESV)

If the message given through angels, the Law, came with consequences for disobedience, how much more serious is it to ignore the salvation Jesus has brought?

Friend, Jesus is worth it. Worth following. Worth trusting. Worth keeping at the centre of your life – not just as a private comfort, but as the King, the Son of God, the Saviour of the world.

Over the next week in this daily devotional series, we’re going to see the glory of angels, and then the even greater glory of Jesus. We’ll be reminded why He is worth our attention, our trust, and our wholehearted devotion. And my prayer is that this vision of Him will anchor you, so you don’t drift away, but keep running the race with joy.

Reflection:

Take a moment to marvel at who Jesus is — greater than the angels, greater than anything else in creation — and thank Him for stooping so low to save you. Ask God to help you pay close attention to this great salvation and not drift away.
