Hebrews 9:27–28

[27] And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, [28] so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. (ESV)

Verse 27 is confronting: “it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.”

That’s the reality for all of us. Every single person. Death once. Then judgment. You. Me. Your neighbour. Your colleague. Your family member. Everyone in your city, suburb, or town. Everyone on this planet. There’s no escaping it. Death is appointed. Judgment follows.

Christ Has Already Dealt With Sin

But look at verse 28. There’s an incredible contrast here.

“So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”

Jesus has already appeared. His first coming was to bear sin – our sin. At the cross, he took the punishment we deserve. He died the death we should have died. He bore the judgment that was ours to face.

Like that scapegoat on the Day of Atonement, as we considered earlier this week, our sin was placed on him. And he took it away, once and for all.

Done. Finished. Dealt with.

He’s Coming Back – But Not for Sin

And now verse 28 tells us he will appear a second time.

But when Jesus returns, it won’t be to deal with sin again. That work is complete. The sacrifice has been made. The blood has been shed. Sin has been put away.

He’s coming back to bring salvation to those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Are You Eagerly Waiting?

That’s the question, isn’t it? Are you eagerly waiting for Jesus’ return? Do you long for that day? Do you long to see the face of your Saviour? The one who paid it all for you?

If you know that your trust is in Jesus – that your sin has been dealt with through his blood shed on the cross – then that day is a good day. It’s the day you’ve been waiting for – the day when salvation is finally, fully yours.

But if your trust is not yet in Jesus, that day is not a good day. Because death and judgment are still coming. And the only way to be saved on that day is to trust in the Saviour now.

The Greatest Need

The greatest need of your neighbour, your colleague, your family member – the greatest need of every living person – is to receive what Jesus offers through his first coming. To trust in his blood shed on the cross. To know that sin has been dealt with. To be ready for his second coming.

Brothers and sisters, he’s coming back. Now is the time to trust him. Now is the time to be found eagerly waiting.

The Good News Is…

The good news is that Jesus will return. He’s already dealt with sin. And when he comes back, he’ll bring salvation to all who are waiting for him. If you’re trusting in Jesus today, that’s your hope. That’s your security. That’s your future.

And if you’re not yet trusting in him, the offer still stands. Come to Jesus now – trust in what he’s done. Be ready for the day he returns.

Reflection

Where does your hope lie when you think about death and judgment? Are you eagerly waiting for Jesus to return, or do you need to come to him today?
