Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.—Psalm 92:14 NLT
How do you see the years ahead, even your old age? Don’t worry, no matter how young you are, it will come. And if you are not young any more, then you would know all about it.
We all have a reason to be optimistic – a great reason – especially when you read the promise above.
I know too many people who reach an age at which they don’t produce fruit, at which they are “grey and gloomy” rather than “green,” and at which “complaining” would be a better description for them than “vital.”
At some time in our lives, we will all have to slow down. And if you are working too hard right now and neglecting your family and yourself, that time might be right now! But slowing down doesn’t mean turning off.
I think of my friend Des Ford. Life has certainly taught him to slow down. However, at 87 years of age, the promise of the Lord above is very clearly fulfilled in him. I can tell you that he certainly has his health issues, but there is nothing in him that is not vital and green and bearing fruit. In fact, he tells me his concern is that he wants to bear as much fruit (souls won for the Kingdom of God) because he considers that his time is short!
I have noticed that as people age they become clearer and clearer images of either the best or the worst of our younger selves. Some people become more bitter as they age, while others become gentler and kinder versions of themselves. And I think we have a choice in this today, right now and on an ongoing basis. Des obviously made that choice a long time ago. By beholding we become changed (2 Cor 3:18). Des chose to look at Jesus.
I want to do that too. I want to produce fruit for as long as God will allow me upon this earth. I want to be vital for the gospel of Jesus Christ, and not for the things of this world. I want to be always green and growing in Christ, no matter how old I am.
Will you join me?
